The Moon, the Stars, and the Things I Can’t Control

I was driving home tonight when I noticed the moon. It was one of those big, bright fall moons that hangs low and makes you want to pull over just to look at it. And as I watched it, something settled into my mind that I think is worth sharing.

I don’t know about you, but in my own life I spend a lot of energy stressing and worrying about things that are completely out of my control. Somewhere along the way, I forget that God is bigger than all of it.

Three Verses Worth Holding Onto

There’s a passage in Psalm 147, verses 3 through 5, that came to mind tonight:

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.”

Read those together, and notice how they fit. The same God who counts the stars and calls each one by name is the God who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. The vastness of the sky and the tenderness of a bandaged heart belong to one and the same God.

Big Enough for the Inside, Too

Standing under that moon, the thought was simple: if I believe in a God big enough to make all of this, to put it in order and keep it running, then He is certainly big enough to handle what’s going on inside me.

The worries that feel enormous to me are not too much for Him. His understanding has no limit, and that includes the things I can’t figure out, the situations I can’t fix, and the burdens I keep trying to carry on my own.

A Note to Myself (and to You)

I’m writing this as much for myself as for anyone else. If you’re carrying something heavy tonight, let this be a small encouragement. Step outside, look up, and remember who made all of that. If you believe in a God who made the stars, then you can trust that He understands whatever you’re facing.

I hope that helps. Until next time, take care and God bless.
